Packing -what to take and why

When you travel the first thing that you realize is that whatever you take eventually you will need to carry and there is just so much a person can take. Rick Steves is an expert traveler and he often has great ideas on what and how to pack on his TV shows. The basic idea is to travel light but still have enough clothes for the weather and places you will stay. Grabbing a bunch of stuff the last few or hours before a trip will almost guarantee failure. I remember once visiting Europe and I had an especially large and heavy zoom lens for a 35mm camera. It must have weighed five pounds. Halfway through the three month trip I was hoping that somebody -anybody would steal it. I hated that lens. Nobody did but I never took it on another trip.

When considering suitcases think long and hard. The ones with wheels are great but only for the medium and large sizes. If you put wheels and a pop up handle on the smaller take on board sizes the mechanism seems to take up a lot of space. A backpack idea is good in many cases as the bag is easier to carry. This is one case where smaller is usually better depending on your trip and purpose. Each situation is different but you would be wise to spend some time thinking out what you need and the best type of bag to carry it.

I have learned one thing about those so called overnight bags that open at the top. I find that if you try and use them for two or three days or more that your clothes get all mixed up and you need to sort through the entire bag to find anything. I hate that! There is a real science and art to packing and it depends on where you are going and how long you will be. Good luck. It makes sense to spend some time thinking about it before you grab a bag and pack.

At the back of your mind think about what might happen if one bag was lost. This happened to us and ALL the vacation clothes were in the bag that was lost and we didn't get the bag back until after the vacation. The air line response was to give us an emergency pack with shampoo, a bar of soap and a toothbrush in it. Not exactly what you need for a week in the Barbados! Remember if it can happen it will happen -sooner or later.
